Castel Mimi Wine Resort
The history of winemaking in Moldova started long before Constantin Mimi created Castel Mimi; around 3000 years ago. The winemaking industry has come a long way since then and seen many evolutions. Our winemaking history starts with Constantin Mimi, the last Governor of Bessarabia and one of the most prolific winemakers and politicians of the 20th century.
Castel Mimi is proudly listed as one of the 15 most beautiful wineries in the world; thanks in part to our unique array of stunning terraces and evergreen gardens. Our large and diverse outdoor areas include a town square, summer terraces, areas for picnics and cooking master-classes and a courtyard where big cultural events are held, like concerts, performances or open-air dinners. Our gardens and terraces are open to visitors and available to hire for private or corporate events.
Mimi Square is the central point in Castel Mimi’s courtyard and offers breath-taking views. It is also home to the only musical, coloured fountain in the country that can dance and change colours at night. Mimi Square is the perfect place for concerts and outdoor events. Visit our Events page or get in touch to find out more.
By the end of the twelfth century, Moldova’s wine industry had become a major sector of Southeastern Europe’s economy. While the whole region has favorable conditions for viniculture, specific areas are especially fertile for growing the most full-bodied grapes. The village of Purcari and the Agon Zograf Monastery vineyards lay at the heart of this special terroir.
In 1827, Emperor of Russia Nicholas I issued a special decree granting Purcari the status of the first specialized winery in Bessarabia. It was named in honor of one of the founders originating from Germany – Harmizone. Since then, the owners of Purcari have become Moldovan boyars (barons) Dancila and Clot, but also other Germans, Russians and French.
At the turn of the century, Château Purcari replanted 250 hectares of vineyards, and installed state-of-the-art technology at the winery. As Moldova’s most prestigious export, Purcari lead the nation’s international development by entering into over 25 markets including the US, Canada, UK, Norway, Czech Republic, China, Poland, and the Baltic countries.
